An apple a day...

At 3:00 am this morning I woke up with that oh-so-lovely disoriented feeling. I talked myself out of falling back to sleep, stumbled to the kitchen and checked my blood sugar...

45 mg/dl.

"Great."

Two juice boxes and a couple of fruit roll-ups later I crawled back in to bed. This morning I woke up with the "I ate my pantry feeling." Yuck. Then I had the thought...

What is the point of brushing your teeth if you have to eat in the middle of the night to treat a low?


This cannot be good dental health. So, I asked my dentist. I let him know that brushing my teeth at 3:00 am was not really something that would ever happen for me.

He suggested, Rinse your mouth out with water before you go back to bed.

That is do-able. Maybe.

Does anyone else brush their teeth after regaining normality? Thoughts? Let me know!

I don't and probably wouldn't brush my teeth in the middle of the night. I can certainly relate to the "I ate my whole pantry" feeling.

I hate when I workout/diet and then wake up to treat a low with all the calories I just tried to burn off. That's a deflating feeling. I think the water rinse would be good if you only treated with juice.

You are so great, Nikki! I might be able to think to rinse my mouth out...good idea. I had the same thing 2 mornings ago and love how you have named it! So true, and so horrible! But, I will be grateful that we woke up to treat the low!

I don't brush, but I do always rinse my mouth with water. It's become a habit. I usually rinse about 3-4 times.
I asked my dentist the same thing years ago, and that was her best idea.
I agree with Tony that it's probably easier to rinse off juice or gel residue than stickier carbs...

Since you only had juice, rinsing your mouth is the best advice because you are removing sugar which is the important ingredient needed to for dental cavities

Nope, I don't brush my teeth after treating a middle of the night low either. The suggestion to rinse with water is a great one though. I could probably do that. Even though I Have glucose tabs on my nightstand so I can treat without needing to get up, I usually do a pee-pee run since I'm awake anyway. From now on, I'll rinse away the glucose tab reside too!! :)

ha ha - my dentist said the same thing. Use water to rinse your mouth out after chowing to treat a low. I used to use these nasty glucose sweets that were acidic so good thing I started doing that otherwise my teeth would have fallen out.

That is a good idea.Brushing is always linked to eating schedules,and therefore every time you eat must make sure you rinse your mouth not to invite trouble to the teeth.

Brush your teeth? rinse out your mouth? I AM JUST TRYING TO FIND MY BED AFTER THE SAME SITUATION OF A LOW OF 40 IN THE WEE HRS AFTER MIDNIGHT. I CRAWL BACK INTO MY BED WHILE THE SUGAR RACES IN MY VEINS AND MY HEART POUNDS AS THE SUGAR RAISES MY BC BACK AND ABOVE THE NORMAL RANGE. AND THEN THE ROLLER COASTER BEGINS OF THE HIGHS AND BRINGING IT BACK DOWN TO NORMAL FOR THE NEXT 24 HRS. I WOULD LOVE TO TAKE A LONG VACATION FROM DIABETES, I HAVE HAD IT FOR NEARLY 30 YRS, HAVE BEEN BLESSED TO HAVE TO GREAT KIDS NEITHER HAVE DIABETES YET. I just let my son go back to bed. He's half asleep already, and will be up for school in 3 1/2 -4 hours anyway, he can brush his teeth when he gets up.

That would be such a pain... I would think it would wake you up if you had to rinse your mouth out after eating but than again... i wouldn't want my teeth to fall out of my head either... i would probably use mouthwash rather than water because if you're going to do it at least do it half way... haha
