Racing to Cure Diabetes...

I found this article on Team Type 1's website. Inspiring...

Team Type 1 is made up of champions – winners at endurance cycling who conquer life with Type 1 diabetes at the same time. In just its second showing in the annual Race Across America (RAAM), the team took home the victory – beating every other team by more than three hours.

"Team Type 1’s goal is to prove that by using the tools provided to manage diabetes, exercise and healthy living, a person with diabetes can do the same as a normal person – only better,” said Phil Southerland, team founder.

The Team Type 1 Race Across America team is comprised of ten persons with Type 1. These international cyclists, who must all monitor their blood sugar with testing, insulin through their pumps, diet, and exercise, are inspiring others with their triumphant journey. The team will cross the United States in 2008, challenging others to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes and encouraging healthy living.

Pressing ahead, Team Type 1 has initiated a pro cycling team of which 4 of the 15 team members will race while managing their diabetes in the pro peleton. Follow Team Type 1 and learn how they make minimal adjustments to lead a maximum life.

Nikki -- This is one GRUELING sport even for people who are otherwise healthy and in good physical condition. To do what these folks do -- and manage their diabetes at the same time -- is an amazing feat.

I love cycling and have followed it since the early 90s, and a large part of my exercise comes from the bike. Reading about Team Type 1 inspires me to ride even more, and I recommend it as a great way to get fit and stay that way.

Thanks for posting the article.

Diabetes is so misunderstood by the general public. It continuously wrecks physical and mental havoc to those that have it and is never ending. Trying to maintain one's sugar is a 24 hour job and seven days a week. This disease is extremely difficult to control and God Bless diabetics that try to hold another job as well because they deserve a medal! No matter what a diabetic does, their sugar levels are affected. They are affected by what they eat, when they eat, don't eat, if they exercise, give too much insulin, give too little insulin, if they sleep in late in the morning, if they get sick, take medications, study too long and don't get food, work late, get stuck on the freeway, etc., etc. All diabetics have their sugar levels rise and fall and this affects other physical or mental problems that they might be prone to by genetics or otherwise. Most diabetics that I know don't want sympathy but the public should be aware that diabetics already have a lot to bear. The rises and fall of sugar affects the life of diabetics and it usually affects the life of those they come in contact with. When the sugar has fallen too low or gone too high a diabetic's personality can change dramatically. If someone you know has diabetes, use compassion and understanding for what they are going through because more often than not, they do deserve it.
